Unfortunately thunderbrowse doesn’t seem to be compatible yet w/ the newest final release of FF. Anyone found another idea? This issue popped up out of the blue for me – very irritating.

Yes Installing Thunderbrowse fixed the problem for me too.

Same issue: On MS Windows XP: Clicking on a link on Thunderbird freezes it and after 30-40 sec the FF window pops up and Thunderbird returns to normal. I have FF3.5.3 and Thunderbird 2.0.23 and started getting this issue as well. I suspect some Windows update causes the problem that was pushed onto my PC a few minutes ago. Maybe some OS calls are screwed and it is waiting for some timeout before finds the proper browser to call. Any idea what to do in Registry or else to fix this?

I think I found a fix. Install thunderbowse , it fixes the problem

I have same problem and look for the solution!
I have Firefox 3.08 and Thunderbird version 2.0.0.21.
The problem appeared recently. Strangely, i didn’t install anything new that would cause it.
