In fact, there was an Elliot living right above me! I can think of at least three others I knew personally as a kid. Now in Texas, not so many. As for shortenings (or lack of). mostly I've been called "Elliot". I have been called "Ellie" by one girlfriend long ago, and "El" by my wife, my dad and a couple of very close friends. I kind of like "El" but I've never referred to myself that way. Wrong spellings? Constantly! I've even had it spelled "Eloit". Interesting, but not my name :) I didn't know it was used to name girls. Learn something new every day. BTW, as a kid I hated the name - Hard for me to pronounce and easy for kids to turn into annoying nicknames. I used my middle name ("Brent") for a year when I started college in Boston, but I gave up when I returned to NY and went back to "Elliot". Thanks for the "Elliott" blog. (grandparents especially!!) i get very annoyed when people ask "whats her name?" then respond with..."oh its a boy?"
