Edgy Adwords

Posted in Google, Search, Spam by Elliott Back on January 5th, 2005.

I would have left a comment on this post from Greedy Girl about the latest edgy Google adwords, but she’s got comments turned off. Apparently searching for popular celebrities pulls up ads such as:

Britney Spears
Britney is pregnant?
pics of Britney from hotel window
www.aolmusic.com

She goes on to write about the branding problems if these ads are actually sponsered by AOL Music:

This is a gusty advertising strategy, and I’m pretty sure it’s getting a lot of click throughs. I like it in principle, but having the little AOL Music URL below each of these ads is a branding nightmare, if you ask me.

Well, take a look at where those URLs actually go:

http:// channelevents.aol.com /aolmusic/ welove/ brittney/ ?ncid= MUSenhancebritney &partner=aff17

They’re indeed affiliate links, not associated with AOL Music in any way. Either Google or AOL should probably know about this. Read more at Greedy Girl…
